Unbekannte haben ein Holocaust-Monument in der mittelgriechischen Stadt Larisa mit rechtsextremistischen Symbolen und Sprüchen geschändet. Der Zentralrat der jüdischen Gemeinden in Griechenland (KIS) verurteilte die Schändung und veröffentlichte am Mittwoch auf seiner Homepage Fotos vom Monument mit den Schmierereien. Almost 120,000 homeowners in Greece who are unable to pay their house loans are in danger of foreclosure as of January 1, 2015, Greek Reporter learned. Das griechische Parlament billigte einen Staatshaushalt, der aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach durchwegs auf Phantasiezahlen beruht. Der Wunsch ist nur allzu verständlich: Nach bald fünf Jahren, in denen die Politik für Griechenland in Brüssel und Washington gemacht worden ist, will die Regierung in Athen wieder selbst das Heft des Handelns in die Hand nehmen – zumal die anderen Programmländer schon mitten in diesem Prozess sind und Oppositionschef Alexis Tsipras vor der wichtigen Präsidentenwahl im Februar mächtig Stimmung machen kann. Der griechische Regierungschef Antonis Samaras will die für Februar 2015 geplante Wahl eines neuen Präsidenten durch das Parlament auf Dezember vorziehen. Die Wahl werde am 17. Dezember beginnen, teilte Regierungssprecherin Sofia Voultepsi am Montag mit. Kandidaten sind bislang nicht genannt worden. Die Wahl eines neuen Präsidenten ist wichtig für die politische Entwicklung in Griechenland. Sollte Samaras' Kandidat nicht die nötige Mehrheit von 180 Stimmen bekommen, müssen vorgezogene Parlamentswahlen stattfinden. Die oppositionelle Linkspartei Syriza fordert Neuwahlen und wird aus diesem Grund nicht für den Kandidaten der Konservativen stimmen und auch keinen eigenen vorschlagen.

Griechenland muss eine einmalige Geldstrafe in Höhe von 10 Millionen Euro zahlen. Das hat der europäische Gerichtshof am Dienstag beschlossen. Grund dafür ist, dass im ganzen Land noch immer 70 illegale bzw. wilde Müllkippen existieren. So lange sich diese Lage nicht ändert, muss Griechenland jedes Halbjahr zusätzlich 14 Millionen Euro an Bußgeldern entrichten. Für jede abgeschaffte unkontrollierte Mülldeponie werden diese Strafgelder um 40.000 Euro gekürzt. Dabei hat sich in diesem Bereich schon einiges getan: Im Februar 2004 gab es in Griechenland noch 1.125 unkontrollierte Müllhalden. Der Präsident des griechischen Nationalen Jugendsportzentrums im Athener Küstenvorort Agios Kosmas wurde am Freitag unter dem Vorwurf verhaftet, in nur einem Monat 800.000 Euro aus der Kasse des Zentrums unterschlagen zu haben. Vorausgegangen war eine Buchprüfung durch die Staatsanwaltschaft zur Bekämpfung der Korruption, meldete die Athener Nachrichtenagentur ANA-MPA. Anlass für die Prüfung war eine Beschwerde von Angestellten des Zentrums im letzten August, dass sie nicht bezahlt worden seien. Das Zentrum am früheren Flughafen Hellenikon wurde 1961 zur Förderung des Breitensports in Griechenland gegründet. Um die Jahrhundertwende wurde es umfassend modernisiert, um als Trainingsplatz für die griechischen Sportler vor den Olympischen Spielen von 2004 in Athen zu dienen.  (Griechenland Zeitung. )

Der griechische Fußball wird erneut von einem Manipulationsskandal erschüttert. Wie die Nachrichtenagentur "AFP" am Donnerstag berichtete, hat die Staatsanwaltschaft Athen Anklage gegen 16 Funktionäre erhoben. Zu den Beschuldigten sollen auch hochrangige Mitarbeiter des griechischen Fußballverbands EPO sowie Schiedsrichter zählen. Den Angeklagten wird laut des Berichts die Bildung einer kriminellen Vereinigung, Betrug, Erpressung und Korruption vorgeworfen. Bei den großangelegten Untersuchungen waren Spiele zwischen 2011 und 2013 in den Fokus der Ermittler geraten. Bereits 2011 hatte ein Wettskandal den griechischen Fußball erschüttert.

Um den Ausstieg Griechenlands aus seinem Rettungsprogramm gibt es vor einem wichtigen Eurogruppentreffen weiter Streit. Während die Troika-Kontrolleure der internationalen Geldgeber eine Verlängerung des Programms um ein halbes Jahr anstrebten, sei Athen nur zu ein oder zwei Monaten bereit, hieß es am Freitag in Brüsseler EU-Kreisen. Die Euro-Finanzminister wollen am Montag darüber sprechen, ob das eigentlich zum Jahresende auslaufende Hilfsprogramm verlängert werden kann. Die Zeit drängt, denn in einigen Eurostaaten, darunter auch Deutschland, dürften Zustimmungen der nationalen Parlamente dazu noch vor der Weihnachtspause nötig sein. Im Hilfsprogramm der Europäer stehen noch 1,8 Milliarden Euro an Krediten für Athen bereit; dieses Geld kann möglicherweise nicht mehr 2014 ausgezahlt werden, da die Troika-Untersuchung immer noch läuft. Three out of four public sector and Social Security Fund (IKA) pensioners in Greece are opting for early retirement. This situation has caused the country’s pension system to become unsustainable, Greek Reporter has learnt. On Wednesday, Greek Labor Minister Yiannis Vroutsis presented data to the parliament, explaining that almost 75% of Greek pensioners are trying to secure their early retirement through legal provisions that allow them to stop working before the age of 61. “In the public sector, 7.91% of pensioners retire between the ages of 26 and 50, 23.64% between 51 and 55, and 43.53% between 56 and 61. In IKA, 4.44% of pensioners retire between the ages of 26 and 50, 12.83% retire between 51 and 55, and 58.61% retire between 56 and 61. Meanwhile, in the so-called healthy funds, 91.6% of people retire before the national retirement age limit,” Vroutsis said.

Students of an international school based in the Greek island of Rhodes, drew a map of Europe, including Macedonia under its constitutional name, which prompted feelings of anger with the children's parents. The father of one child took a photo of the map and put it online, saying, among other things, that the school is partially funded by the local authorities. The parent asked the teacher in the school's Finnish department why the map included the name of the country which Greece does not recognize. "Her response was that children in Finland and Europe learn this history and geography," the parent writes.

In an article about the recent discovery at the archeological site near Amphipolis written by Anthee Carassava,  a correspondent from Athens  and published by The  Sunday Times the author states that the archeological site  is near the border with Macedonia. This statement caused  an avalanche of anger in the Greek media. Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki held Friday a working breakfast with ambassadors of EU member-states, also attended by Christian Danielsson, Director General for Enlargement at the European Commission, MIA reports from Brussels. FM Poposki stressed that a repeat of the Greek blockade in the European Council would not improve the state of Union enlargement, whereas European Commission officials stressed that Greece is expected to help the advancement of Macedonia’s Euro-integration process. “We presented our arguments, saying the Commission has recommended the launch of accession talks for the sixth year running, while the Council has delayed the decision under the influence of a bilateral issue of a member-state. The repeat of this recipe does not lead to progress and start of the negotiations, whereas a decision for the launch of such talks is a necessity”, Poposki told MIA after the meeting.

The Director-General of Greek think-tank ELIAMEP Thanos Dokos announced that the proposed new name “Upper Macedonia” was a good basis for future cooperation in the Greek-Macedonia naming dispute, website NOVA reports. Mr Dokos describes the solution as acceptable for the Greek side. However, he still does not think that consensus on the issue would be reached.  Macedonian Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki, on the other hand, rejected recent media claims that such a proposal had been put forth. According to Mr Poposki, the party in power, VMRO – DPMNE, would never agree to change the constitutional name of the country or to any proposal that endangers the Macedonian people, their identity, language, or culture.

Die Flüchtlinge des griechischen Sammellagers Amygdaleza sind nach dem Tod eines Leidensgenossen in Hungerstreik getreten. Nach Informationen der antirassistischen griechischen Organisation KEERFA vom Dienstag verstarb Mohamed Asfak bereits am 6. November, kurz nachdem er aus dem Lager ins Krankenhaus gebracht worden war. KEERFA zufolge litt der 26jährige Pakistaner seit Monaten an den Folgen schwerer körperlicher Misshandlungen: Er war bei einem Aufstand im Sammellager von Korinth von der eingesetzten Polizei brutal zusammengeschlagen worden. Nach seiner Verlegung ins Lager von Amygdaleza, einen Vorort von Athen, habe Asfak über schwere Atembeschwerden geklagt und verlangt, in ein Krankenhaus gebracht zu werden. After perfecting their economic model, Greece has revolutioned the way a country takes care of its handicapped children. A BBC reporter was stunned during a visit to one of Greece's Government run "institution" where disabled children are locked up in cages - staff say they want to improve conditions but money is short!   Nine-year-old girl stands and rocks backwards and forwards, staring through the bars of a wooden cage. When the door is unlocked she jumps down on to the stone floor and wraps her arms tightly around the nurse. But a few minutes later she allows herself to be locked back in again without a fuss. As in medieval time, she is used to her cage. It's been her home since she was two years old. This girl, who has been diagnosed with autism, lives in a state-run institution for disabled children in Lechaina, a small town in the south of Greece, along with more than 60 others, majority of whom are locked in cells or cages.

The Greeks have been accused of a cultural theft, from a different nation this time, after stealing an image of one of Australia's most famous natural landmarks for a promotional video, reads "The Telegraph". The video, produced by the Greek national tourism board, featured images of the Twelve Apostles, a spectacular cluster of rock stacks which lie off the coast of Victoria in southern Australia. The footage of the Twelve Apostles, which are frequently used in Australian tourism campaigns, was taken by an Australian photographer, Alex Cherney. He said he found it “preposterous” that a 15-second clip of his time-lapse footage was used to publicise a tourist destination in the northern hemisphere, several thousand miles away.

Greek officials prevented the New European Theater Association - NETA to become a member of the Union of Theatres of Europe (UTE), report Greek media today. From November 13 to 16, a general assembly of the UTE was held in Tel Aviv. According to Greek media, when the discussion came to proposals for new partnerships and new members, "NETA network based in Bitola, Macedonia, chaired by the former Minister of Culture Blagoj Stefanovski came into sight ". “Artistic director of the National Theatre of Northern Greece Yannis Vuros immediately reacted and noted that he is committed to openness and cooperation, adding that he could not collaborate with theater from Skopje who steals the name of Macedonia, which is not recognized by the United Nations and Greece”, read the Greek media. The Greek newspaper "Parapolitika" reported that "in order to show that national issues will be put highly on the Greek government agenda," the leader of SYRIZA, Alexis Tsipras is planning to visit Macedonia. Der Fahrer des X5 zeigte ihm eine gefälschte Vollmacht und wurde daraufhin festgenommen. Ermittler fanden heraus, dass die Bande auch ein anderes Fahrzeug gemietet hatte. Nach einer internationalen Fahndung wurde der zweite BMW im griechischen Orestiada sichergestellt. Auch sein Lenker landete im Polizeigewahrsam.

A Greek bid to blackmail Swiss Film Festival backfired this weekend, after official Athens via its Ambassador in Switzerland requested films from Macedonia present at the Festival in Lugano change the country of origin using the acronym. Officials at the "Other Movie" Film Festival refused Athens' request, which resulted in the removal of 5 movies from Greece and 2 from Cyprus.  This however infuriated Greek Film Makers who worked hard on their movies to see them removed from the Swiss Festival without even being consulted by the Greek Government. “There are OECD member-states that recognise the country as Macedonia. That is a big problem and we’ve missed a huge opportunity,” Stavros Theodorakis, the leader of the Greek political party Potami, said at an event in Serres, Greece. At the event, he was asked to comment on “Skopje’s use of the name Macedonia”. Reiterating that many countries around the world recognised Macedonia’s constitutional name, he stressed that a geographical qualifier, but not another type, was a brave political move, adding that Skopje should be pressured into accepting the name North Macedonia. According to him, Greece shouldn’t “close its eyes” because it could face the same problem with other areas in the future.

The village mayor of Ovcarani, Gjorgi Javramov, says that Macedonians in Greece are increasingly seeking membership in SYRIZA because they will easier find employment through this party, which is a certain winner of the next elections, Telegraf.mk reports. Javramov, who became head of the village through membership in SYRIZA on the last local elections, said that the situation in Greece is difficult, but it’s even harder if you're a member of a minority that the government does not recognize. “People here are poor and life is hard. They seek salvation by joining some party and SYRIZA is the first choice. The fact that many of them visit Bitola regularly to purchase groceries and to look for work speak volumes about the condition of the people in Ovcharani. They often have problems on the way back with the border police that inquire them why they go to Macedonia,” Javramov says.

According to the Huffington Post's recently published Gallup survey of the "12 Countries that Hate Their Government Most", Greece ranks third, just behind Bosnia and Herzegovina and Bulgaria, the Greek Reporter has learnt. "In many countries, lawmakers and their governments are quite unpopular. U.S. President Barack Obama’s approval rating sank to 42% in October from over 65% when he was elected into office, according to Gallup. However, Obama still looks exceptionally popular in contrast to some governments’ approval ratings. The government of Bosnia and Herzegovina, for instance, had the world’s lowest approval rating, at just 8%. Based on Gallup’s study "Global States of Mind 2014" released at the Meridian Global Leadership Summit, these are the countries that hate their government most," the article reads.
