Greece Shows No Signs of Interest for Nimetz's New Round of Talks

Greece has shown no signs of interest regarding the fresh round of talks in New York tomorrow in the frames of the negotiation process on solving the name row.

It is a usual practice in the days prior to meetings with Matthew Nimetz Greek media to speculate on possible outcomes, publishing various "exclusive" information from "reliable sources", but this time, there are no articles on the matter.

The latest information on the subject were published a month ago, when Macedonian media as well reported that Skopje and Athens have not received an official new proposal on the name from UN Special Envoy Matthew Nimetz.

Greece's Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos, after yesterday's meeting at the foreign policy national council did not state any novelty in terms of the negotiations. He reiterated that Greece is respecting the process and the mediator, and that the country "participates with good will and on a constructive way, and expects the same actions from the other side."

"Our position is very clear and it is a position in alignment with the international law, as well as the need in the wider region of Southeast Europe to become a region of stability and prosperity," Venizelos said.

The interim agreement between Greece and Macedonia obliges Greece not to oppose the accession or the full-fledged membership of Macedonia in international organizations under the temporary reference "Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia," as it is determined in Resolution 817 (1993) of the United Nations Security Council.

The verdict of the International Court of Justice from December 2011 states that Greece has violated the 1995 Interim Agreement by "objecting the Republic of Macedonia's accession to NATO in period before the NATO Summit in Bucharest in 2008".

Despite everything, Athens officials claims that its position is in line with international law.
