The Greeks were never what the Germans thought of them

Bild
"The Greeks were never what the Germans thought of them" On the criticism of philhellenism For a long time "Greece" was the projection screen for idealized ideas. But what made the Philhellenes so special? And what about philhellenism today? Caricatures are currently playing an aggressive to mean role in Greek-German relations. May I help you look at an older caricature by my friend Kostas Mitropulos? [1] A delighted, laughing man in antique hoplite armor stands on the right: round shield with meander pattern, breastplate, the open storm helmet, greaves and hand spear are easy to see. The gaze and the words are directed towards the person opposite, identified by their cap, black hair and mustache as the prototype of a Greek named Jorgos, Kostas or Jannis, whose gaze seems somewhat perplexed. The former applies the ancient Greek sentence ’to the latter, whereupon the razor-sharp conclusion: ah German - that can only be a German....

MHRMI: North American Musems Perpetuate Myth of Greek Continuity

Bild
Four North American museums, in association with the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports, have embarked on an ambitious quest to spread the myth of a 5,000 year-old "Greek" culture, including the misappropriation of Macedonian king, Alexander the Great. The exhibition is called "The Greeks – Agamemnon to Alexander the Great" and is currently on display at Pointe-à-Callière, Montréal and will be followed by displays at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, the Field Museum in Chicago and the National Geographic Museum in Washington D.C. Irresponsibly, the project was sponsored, in part, by the Department of Canadian Heritage and promoted by the Embassy of Canada to Greece. The Western world's romanticizing of Greece's history has contributed to the perpetuation of the Greek myth of ethnic purity and self-proclaimed superiority and has resulted in the most openly racist country in the Western world. Yet, Western culture has no problem in celebra...

A new feature in Greek politics: Archaeology

Bild
I have just returned from a holiday to my home country, where the horror of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) seems remote and where people have been immersed in a heated debate over the historical past and contemporary politics.  A few of you may have heard the name of Amphipolis. But for the Greeks, this once-famous ancient port known for its gold and silver resources has become more than just a ruined ancient city in the center of Greek Macedonia. For Greeks, still struggling to cope with impossible economic hardship and an uncertain future, it has become the utopian land of their grandiose ancient past, which produced world heroes like Alexander the Great. After all, it was from the port of Amphipolis that the fleet of the ancient Macedonian king launched its conquests. There was a strong reason why most Greeks were brought into a perpetual dream-like state and temporarily put aside their real life problems.   During this summer’s excavations at ...

Greek Institute Conducted Survey in Skopje about Athens’ Influence on the Balkans

Athens cannot allow the degradation of Greek foreign policy on the Balkans in the upcoming years. Although the image of the Western Balkan country has suffered a great deal due to the economic crisis, the losses are not big, concludes an analysis of the effects of the financial crisis on Greece’s foreign policy on the Balkans, published recently by Greek foreign policy foundation ELIAMEP. The esteemed Greek institute carried out telephone and online survey of experts on Greek foreign policy in several Western Balkan countries, including Macedonia, in order to find out whether the crisis had changed Greece’s image in the region.

EU TOLERATES HATE SPEECH AGAINST MACEDONIA IN GREECE, SAYS MACEDONIAN GOVERNMENT

Bild
The Macedonian Government issued an announcement Sunday condemning the latest videos posted on You Tube showing Greek infantry calling nationalistic cadences full of hatred against Greece’s neighbors, Vest reports. In the latest video that has recently been posted on You Tube and the Facebook profile page of Dimitris Papadimoulis, a Member of the Greek Parliament from Syriza, during an exercise of unfamiliar date, soldiers of the Greek army can be seen marching and heard calling “We are going to suck the blood of Turks, Skopians and Albanians.” “ The Government of the Republic of Macedonia is most harshly condemning the violent and menacing vocabulary of the Greek soldiers, typical of certain bygone times. Such acts stoke up inter-state hatred. The Government is taking all diplomatic steps to condemn this and other similar events in the Hellenic Republic, which do not contribute to the promotion of good-neighborliness and the spirit of cooperation, ” the Government stated Sun...

Greek soldiers threaten Macedonians, Turks, Albanians, Kosovars

Bild
Greek soldiers a filmed vowing to invade Cyprus and Macedonia and claim the Hagia Sofia in Istanbul. Video footage of the Greek army chanting hateful slogans against Turks, Macedonians and Albanians has appeared in public. The leaked footage shows around 50 Greek soldiers 'strengthening their national spirit' by singing songs about how they want to "drink blood of Turks, Albanians and Kosovars in the mountains." "Hagia Sofia will be Greek again and Cyprus and Macedonia will belong to Greece," they are heard saying as they train, evoking the 'megalo idea' of Greater Greece. The video, which is now under investigation, drew huge condemnation in Macedonia, Albania and Kosovo after it was aired.

WikiLeaks: Venizelos’ surname was Turkoglu and he is the creator of the embargo on Macedonia

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, Evangelos Venizelos, was born Turkoglu, which translated from Turkish means “son of Turk”, but has changed it in order to advance in his political career. According to official data, Venizelos is directly involved in the name dispute with Macedonia in the period when Greece opposed the use of the name “Macedonia” by the newly independent Republic of...

Griechische Kirche will Mitspracherecht bei Schulbüchern

Metropolitan Anthimos of Solun, Priest or Antichrist?

Bild
Metropolitan Anthimos, according to the clothing he puts on each morning is a Greek 'priest' based in Solun. Over the years, no individual in Greece (including politicians) has shown as much hatred towards Macedonia and the Macedonians than him. During this weekend Easter liturgy, Anthimos prayed that "Skopje does not enter the EU". Why would a supposed priest be preoccupied with a political recourse of a different country? The answer lies somewhere between the present, the past and Anthimos broken mind. In a different church ceremony, Metropolitan Anthimos announced to the gathered followers that "Skopje trains their youth to use guns by the age of 15 to kill Greeks". The interesting thing about this is the sheer lunacy of the statement and the fact this man has no control nor any sort of threshold of where his line is, therefore there is never an effort not to cross that imaginary line. As for the statement itself, we can provide no help nor ...

Greece sad as long time SDSM leader and Greek representative quits

Bild
Greek media quicker than their Macedonian counterparts announced the quitting of Branko Crvenkovski from the SDSM leadership.  Will Branko finally be able to spend his retirement days in Athens, or is this supposed 'quitting' just another fluke. Crvenkovski has announced he would quit four times now, only to change his mind and continue his strong hold of the SDSM party. SDSM under Crvenkovski has suffered numerous defeats in both local and parliamentary elections, the latest defeat being more catastrophic than previous ones, with the SDSM winning four mayoral spots compared to the fifty eight won by their biggest rival, the VMRO-DPMNE. In fact, the SDSM aka Communist Party of Macedonia under Crvenkovski have never won regular elections - came to power early on with unseen fraud, and later were even the culprits (2001) in orchestrating a small scale war to enter Parliament. Should he stay away from politics for good, Crvenkovski's name is and will continue t...

Hate crimes increase, extreme right strengthens as Greece economy sinks

Bild
With the Greek unemployment rate at 25 percent, anti-foreigner sentiment is growing. NBC News' Andy Eckardt meets politician Ilias Panagiotaros of the far-right Golden Dawn party and Ali Rahimi, an Afghan national who was attacked by a mob and told to leave Greece. Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news , world news , and news about the economy Ali Rahimi was enjoying a warm Greek evening, chatting away with two friends, when a mob of 15 people approached and asked where they were from. "I told them that I am from Afghanistan and they said that it is time for me to go back to my country," the 28-year-old asylum-seeker told NBC News. Rahimi attempted to run away but was cornered, beaten, hit over the head with a bottle and stabbed in the chest and back by three assailants in the entryway of his Athens apartment building.  "When police arrived they called an ambulance, but then told me that they could not help me any further and left," Rahimi recalle...

The rise of the Golden Dawn and extremism in Greece can be seen as part of a broader phenomenon of a culture of intolerance, which is maintained and perpetuated through the Greek education system

Bild
The rise of the Golden Dawn and extremism in Greece can be seen as part of a broader phenomenon of a culture of intolerance, which is maintained and perpetuated through the Greek education system. During the past month, Greece has seen a spate of incidents involving racist violence, as well as terrorist attacks targeting economic institutions. Daphne Halikiopoulou and Sofia Vasilopoulou argue that these incidents reflect not only the rise of the extreme-right in the country, typified by the Golden Dawn party, but the rise of extremism more generally. The extreme-right in Greece provides an avenue of expression for the angry, unemployed, and dispossessed. This, as well as other types of extremism and violence, constitute an outlet encouraged and maintained by the country’s education system, which teaches lawlessness, resistance and defiance of authority as the defining features of Greek national identity . Last week, while the Greek parliament deliberated a political inquir...
