Theodorakis: The Problem Is that Many Countries Have Recognized Macedonia under Its Constitutional Name

There are OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) member-countries that have recognized the country as Macedonia. It is a big problem and we missed a huge opportunity, said the leader of the Greek party Potami, Stavros Theodorakis.

Theodorakis, whose party is the third political force in Greece, attended the event in Serres, where he was asked to comment the fact that "Skopje uses the name Macedonia." Recalling that many countries of the world have recognized Macedonia under its constitutional name, Theodorakis said that a geographical qualifier, is a bold political move and that pressure should be exercised over Skopje to accept the name "Northern Macedonia".

"In future we may have the same problem in other areas. So, the solution is not to close our eyes. Greece is in the center of the Balkans, Macedonia is here, and over here there are archaeological sites, but there are some areas which are in other states. We do not have any feelings of remorse as to the fact that we are strong, continued the leader of Potami, noting that "on the other hand Athens behavior has brought the country to this impasse."

"Armed with the European Union, armed with our membership in NATO we should be exerting pressure over the small countries to accept the existence of a state without which they will not make any move towards the European Union and NATO", said Theodorakis.

Potomi Member later, Nikos Dimou, in March this year also said the Greek government has managed the name issue in a wrong manner, and that this is an issue that Greece has already lost. Being a guest on television Sky, Dimou said he supports solution based on a composite name with a geographical qualifier, but added that he agrees that Macedonia can be called as it prefers even "and Macedonia."

After this statement MIA seek comment from him, which would explain in detail this position. Although at first he agreed to answer a few questions, after they were mailed to him, Dimou changed his mind and said that "it is wrong to express a personal opinion, now that he is already a member of a political party."

The name issue of our country is a common topic of discussion among the smaller political parties in Greece. In the absence of ambitious economic programs they promote nationalist feelings, hoping to attract more supporters.
