Macedonians in Greece Join SYRIZA to Find Work

The village mayor of Ovcarani, Gjorgi Javramov, says that Macedonians in Greece are increasingly seeking membership in SYRIZA because they will easier find employment through this party, which is a certain winner of the next elections, Telegraf.mk reports.

Javramov, who became head of the village through membership in SYRIZA on the last local elections, said that the situation in Greece is difficult, but it’s even harder if you're a member of a minority that the government does not recognize.

“People here are poor and life is hard. They seek salvation by joining some party and SYRIZA is the first choice. The fact that many of them visit Bitola regularly to purchase groceries and to look for work speak volumes about the condition of the people in Ovcharani. They often have problems on the way back with the border police that inquire them why they go to Macedonia,” Javramov says.

Opposition SYRIZA and its leader Alexis Tsipras are the most serious candidate to take power on the next elections which are expected to be scheduled in the spring because the current Prime Minister Antonis Samaras is finding more difficult to secure majority in the parliament, which was best seen on the last confidence vote two weeks ago.

The last survey published a few days ago showed that SYRIZA has edge over New Democracy and if elections are to be called it would be able to form government with no problems. SYRIZA is further encouraged by the good result achieved in the last local and European elections.

The opinions are that Tsipras, who is more moderate politician than Samaras, will have softer approach to the demands of the Macedonian minority in Greece. They are primarily in connection to studying Macedonian language in the municipalities where Macedonians are majority.

The Greek government so far remained deaf to their demands and the Macedonian minority is considering turning to the Human Rights Court in Strasbourg. One of the strongest opponents to their demands is the mayor of Florina, Ioannis Voskopoulos, known for its anti-Macedonian sentiments.

Even the signatures collected by the residents as an appeal for the learning of Macedonian language to be allowed in schools has not help. Ovcarani, or Meliti in Greek, is located near Florina and is one of villages in the Aegean region with largest Macedonian community. There are about 1,500 residents and three primary schools.

Pande Ashlakov, former mayor of the village, says they have no intention of giving up the idea the children from the region to learn Macedonian language, although they are not optimistic.

“One can never be sure what to expect from the Greek authorities. We submitted new request to Kozani Prefecture and this time, in order not to irritate them, we said in the application that we require "native language" study instead Macedonian language for the children up to sixth grade,” Ashlakov explains.

Apart from Ovcarani, Macedonians in Greece also have village mayor in the village of Neret or Polipotamos, as this village is called in Greek, where Vasil Stojkov won the mayor’s office also through membership in SYRIZA.
