Once a Thief... Greece accused by Australia for Cultural Theft

The Greeks have been accused of a cultural theft, from a different nation this time, after stealing an image of one of Australia's most famous natural landmarks for a promotional video, reads "The Telegraph".
The video, produced by the Greek national tourism board, featured images of the Twelve Apostles, a spectacular cluster of rock stacks which lie off the coast of Victoria in southern Australia.

The footage of the Twelve Apostles, which are frequently used in Australian tourism campaigns, was taken by an Australian photographer, Alex Cherney.
He said he found it “preposterous” that a 15-second clip of his time-lapse footage was used to publicise a tourist destination in the northern hemisphere, several thousand miles away.

Mr Cherney said his footage had been used without permission by the Greek National Tourism Organisation in its promotional film, Gods, Myths and Heroes.
He said that after contacting them about the footage, which he shot in 2010, the authority agreed to pay him for its use.

The Greek tourism authority attempted to justify the use of the images by saying that the night-time footage of the Twelve Apostles featured southern hemisphere constellations, which are named after "Greek gods and heroes".
“Almost all the over the world, wherever you turn, you will meet an idea, a name, that originated from Greece. Even in the skies of Australia in the southern hemisphere, when lifting your eyes upward, you will see stars and constellations that carry Greek names,” the tourism board said in a statement, apparently citing comic phrases from "My Big Fat Greek Wedding".
“The mythology of the sky at all latitudes and longitudes of the Earth is Greek.”

Mr Cherney said that was a farcical argument and that the tourism authority could have chosen from any number of stretches of the Greek coast rather than using a clip from the other side of the world.
“That’s fine to make a mistake, but coming up with an excuse or an explanation like that is funny,” he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
