Children's Map Showing Macedonia Angers Greek Parents in Rhodes Island

Students of an international school based in the Greek island of Rhodes, drew a map of Europe, including Macedonia under its constitutional name, which prompted feelings of anger with the children's parents.

The father of one child took a photo of the map and put it online, saying, among other things, that the school is partially funded by the local authorities.

The parent asked the teacher in the school's Finnish department why the map included the name of the country which Greece does not recognize.

"Her response was that children in Finland and Europe learn this history and geography," the parent writes.

Later, the parent appealed to the local authorities, urging for immediate change of the name "into the country's international name, not the one it uses or is maybe used by other countries".

The international school in Rhodes was opened in 1999 and has eight departments: English, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish. It was established upon the initiative of parents in mixed marriages, in the aim of creating a bilingual and multicultural environment for their children. Courses are held daily, administered by qualified teachers.
