Greek Think Tank Blames Macedonia and Gruevski Over Name Issue

Greek ELIAMEP think tank has published its latest White Book on foreign policy, national security and defense. MIA correspondent in Athens reports that in their latest report ELIAMEP continues to blame Macedonia for the name issue, which it sees will continue despite pressures from the United States and Germany to complete the European Union and NATO enlargement in the region.

In their report, ELIAMEP and its head Thanos Dokos write that they see Macedonia as a fragile country with worsening inter-ethnic relations between what they call its Slavic speaking people and the ethnic Albanian community. Greek media and public commentators often use such terms instead of Macedonians. The report claims that European officials have focused blame for the fact that the name issue has not yet been resolved on Macedonian leader Nikola Gruevski, and see little prospect of resolving it so long as Gruevski is the leading political figure in Macedonia.

Regarding Greece's own challenges, the report notes that the country needs to work to repair its international credibility, and to reassert its influence in the region.
