Macedonian Foreign Minister Urges for Improved Macedonian-Greek Refugee Coordination

Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki has urged for improvement of coordination on a government level between Macedonia and Greece in relation to the refugee issue.

"The border will not be closed but we need to have a routing system. We need coordination with Greece. At the moment there is cooperation between police officers, such as information exchange over the number of people arriving from the Greek port of Piraeus. There is also exchange of information between the bordering municipalities of Polykastro and Gevgelija, but we need to improve the communication on government level. We are concerned about Serbia closing its border, like some other countries did. Macedonia is the only country where refugees enter from an EU and Schengen member-state", said Poposki at a briefing with Greek journalists visiting Macedonia.

According to him, it has become clear following the Paris attacks that a system for inspecting citizens on the Balkan refugee route is required.

"It is one thing if a person comes from the war torn city of Aleppo and another if a person arrives from Karachi in search for a better life in Europe. Both requests are valid, but they need to be distinguished", added Poposki.

He stressed that despite the request by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker for improved cooperation between Macedonia and Greece on the issue, there is still no continual EU pressure on Greece to cooperate.

The FM will pay a return visit to Athens in the coming period which will be aimed at confidence-building measures between the two countries.

"Kotzias was the first Greek foreign minister to pay a bilateral visit to Macedonia, since all prior meetings were held in a different context. Both Macedonia and Greece have normal relations with almost all countries in the world. Why shouldn't we have such bilateral relations? I expect the meeting will focus on the confidence-building measures and enhancing the level of trust", underlined Poposki.
