Greek Foreign Ministry Denies Closing of Office that Deals with Macedonia

Greek Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Konstantinos Kutras denied reports that, as part of the budget cuts, the Government plans to eliminate the foreign relations department in the Ministry for Macedonia and Thrace. The Ministry, formerly known as the Ministry for Northern Greece, is in charge of managing the northern part of the country, and media outlets accused the Ministry that the cuts will affect the Greek ability to conduct the long running dispute of the name of the Republic of Macedonia.

"I categorically deny that the Foreign Affairs Ministry plans for close that office. The regional secretariat in Thessaloniki (Solun) is an antenna of the Foreign Affairs Ministry serving multiple functions", Kutras said.

Speaking further on relations between Macedonia and Greece, Kutras said that the Greek position remains clear, that it believes it has made enough concessions in the past, and now waits for moves from the "friendly neighboring country that is dealing with numerous issues".

The United Nations appointed mediator on the name issue -Matthew Nimetz recently called on Macedonia and Greece announcing that now is the time to resolve the name issue. Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski invited his Greek counterpart Alexis Tsipras to a meeting dedicated to the issue, when the two met briefly during the UN General Assembly in New York. And Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias faced a deluge of criticism from other parties in the Greek Parliament when he simply sent a letter asking them to state their positions on the name issue.
