Greece Is Letting Immigrants through Border with Macedonia

Large groups of immigrants are still entering Macedonia through the Greece border. In Suva Reka near the border, makeshift camps are set up, where migrants rest so they can continue their journey, reports Igor Chavevski a reporter from Telegraf.mk.

Most of the immigrants are Syrian and Iraqi. They have problems with the police so they are forced to hide in bushes and rough terrains in order to continue their journey.

In the mean time changes to the asylum law will provide approval certificates that are valid for a 72 hours stay in the country until they leave  or seek asylum.

For now, the restrictive asylum law forces hundreds of immigrants to illegally cross the Greece border and transit through Macedonia.

They are not allowed to use public transportation, buses, trains, and the railroads they have been using have proven to be very dangerous because around 27 died in train related accidents.

Those that entered a network of smugglers, were usually apprehended by the police and sent to the Migrant Center where conditions are unbearable and inhumane as the human rights organizations have reported.

Lastly, the immigrants started to cross the country using bicycles, which have not made their struggles any easier.

Aside from police troubles, the immigrants have developed rivalries amongst them which additionally makes their situation more difficult. On Sunday two groups from Syria and Iraq fought, and one 26 year old Syrian was injured.
