Kathimerini: Venizelos Reacts to US Pressure Regarding Name Dispute

Greek daily Kathimerini claims it had the possibility to see a letter sent by former Greek Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos in December 2014 to the US Secretary of State, John Kerry, in which Greece opposed the designation of the Republic of Macedonia under its constitutional name, during the coalition meeting against the Islamic State, held in Brussels.

Venizelos then told Greek media that as a sign of protest, he had left the meeting of allies, while Athens reacted to the 'incident' after the event, after Greek media severely attacked the chief of diplomacy over the designation of the country.

"The American representatives refused to change the way in which the Republic of Macedonia was denominated. Kathimerini had the opportunity to look at the letter sent by Minister Venizelos then to the Secretary of State, John Kerry. Venizelos says he is deeply disappointed with US's conduct, which chaired the meeting, and added that the US have shown lack of respect of the temporary agreement between Athens and Skopje, as well as that after this event, it becomes even harder to reach a deal between these two countries in the United Nations," Kathimerini writes in a comprehensive analysis by Sotiris Sideris.

According to the newspaper, Greece perceived Macedonia's designation in December as an attempt by the US to pressure the Greek side to finally reach a solution to the name dispute.

During the meeting held at the beginning of December last year, 62 countries, members of the US-led coalition against ISIS, the Macedonian Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki was announced under the country's constitutional name, while in the closing declaration, none of the countries were called by their constitutional names. However, having into consideration that Greece was facing election then, the Greek media criticized Venizelos' participation, after which he told media he left the meeting as a sign of protest.

In Sideris' analysis published by Kathimerini, it is said that Greece took seriously the designation of Poposki, which the US uses since 2004, as a new attempt by Washington to exert pressure on Athens. Sideris writes that Greece tried to change the way Poposki's country was called during the meeting by presenting the issue before the Assistant Secretary of State, Victoria Nuland, but the US refused again.

The newspaper recollects this episode and reveals details concerning the letter when Macedonia and Greece are undergoing talks on series of measures set to improve bilateral relations.

Minister Poposki and his newly appointed Greek counterpart, Nikos Kotzias have met around ten days ago in Riga, where they discussed confidence measures. Kathimerini in this article, as the majority of the Greek media, following the Riga meeting, warned the Greek public that behind the measures designed to improve relations between Macedonia and Greece is Germany, which last summer sent a strong request to all Balkan countries that are not yet EU member states to work on overcoming their differences and work on joint projects.

Now, Kathimerini adds that this demand to improve relations is a joint position of Berlin, Brussels and Washington. At the same time, Sideris warns the new Greek government led by far-left party SYRIZA that there could be serious consequences if it reacts badly on the pressure by the Western allies to allow opening of negotiations for Macedonia's EU membership.
