Greek Anarchists Storm Ruling Party Headquarters

Members of Greek anarchist movement seized the central office of the left-wing SYRIZA party in Athens, demanding to close maximum security prisons and free the detained in the case of Conspiracy of the Fire Nuclei radical group, The GreekReporter.com reads.

A group of 50 anarchists burst into the offices of the radical left-wing SYRIZA party in downtown Athens on Sunday, forcing staff to leave the building, party officials said.

The anarchists hung banners from the building’s balconies calling for the abolition of the controversial C-type jails, where the country’s most notorious criminals and terrorists are held.

The activists demand freeing the relatives of the Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei members, who were arrested earlier in March on suspicion of aiding terrorist activities and another radical left activist, who was injured during a failed bombing attempt in 2002.

The group also demands the government to reduce the length of maximum prison term from life sentence to 12 years and the length of pre-trial detention to a maximum of 12 months, as well as to allow prisoners to use Internet.

The protesters also demanded the release of Savvas Xeros, the bomb-maker of the extreme left-wing 17 November terrorist group, who is serving life in prison and is in ill health.
