Greek Media: Austria Exerts Pressure in Support of Skopje

In headlines citing "The Austrian Foreign Ministry Makes Complaint on Greece", "Austria Exerts Pressure in Support of Skopje", "Provocation Coming from Austria's Foreign Minister", Greek media have transmitted Sebastian Kurz's statement on the EC report on the progress of Western Balkan countries.

"The continuous blockage of the opening of accession talks for Macedonia due to the unsolved name dispute puts the already achieved results in question. In the long run, it could destabilize the entire region. Therefore, I call on the European Council to finally lift the blockade," Kurz said.

According to Greek media Kurz's attitude has opened a frontline with Greece.

Imerisia writes that Kurz has again expressed hope that Greece will stop blocking Macedonia, a stance that he had previously expressed in January this year.

The newspaper has reiterated Kurz's statement made in January saying that the name issue must not present an obstacle for Macedonia's EU integration. He then expressed hope that during Greece's Presidency with the European Union, the blockade would be lifted for Macedonia, because "Greece is definitely interested in achieving success during its presidency".

This statement was also a motive for Austria's Die Presse to write "New Minister of Foreign Affairs enters in conflict with Greece", Greek media read.
