NIMITZ: MACEDONIANS HAVE THEIR OWN IDENTITY AND IT CANNOT BE NEGOTIATED

The issue of Macedonia's name is a question that affects many countries including the U.S. and Germany and many countries want to see it resolved due to the events in the world. The problems should not be left to remain, but to be decided promptly, UN mediator in the name dispute Matthew Nimetz said after the meeting with Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski.

.
He said he supports the interest that German Chancellor Angela Merkel has shown to resolve the name because many countries are interested in the stability of the region.

He said that UN mandate is clear and defined according to the resolutions of the World organization and refers to the name.

UN, Nimetz said do not negotiate for identities of people. When we talk to the Greeks we talk about the name, and both sides know it, but, he says, it is obvious that there are other issues in the minds of people throughout this process takes place for many years, but the essence of the talks is the name of state, - UN mediator.

- People have their own identity and it is not negotiable, but they create it with their works and culture - Nimetz said when asked if the identity is an issue which is discussed as recently noted German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Asked whether the statement of the Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras that there is no Macedonian language contributes to resolving the dispute, Nimitz answered:

- I will not comment on individual statements. However, I am here in Skopje. I know that people have their own language. During the whole time of the negotiations there were statements that were distracting from the main goal, which is finding a solution. Nimitz assessed the talks with Gruevski as constructive and expects Greek side to show constructiveness too.

The Mediator today, met with President George Ivanov, Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki, as well as new Macedonian representative in the name Vasko Naumovski. Tomorrow Nimitz leaves for Athens for talks with Greek leadership.
