General from “Golden Dawn” will decide on the Resolution on Macedonia in EP

George Epitideios Greek retired general and member of the leadership of neo-fascist party “Golden Dawn”, which in the last European elections become member of the European Parliament today was elected at the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) of the European Parliament.

As MIA reporter from Brussels informs, this means that general in whose army several years ago soldiers sang songs for “flaying skin of Gipsy Skopjans,” in future will be one of the 71′s MEPs in AFET which will decide on EP Resolution, which each year adpts decision for Macedonia as candidate country for EU membership.

Today, at the European Parliament’s session in Strasbourg, in the Committee on Foreign Affairs was elected Andrew Kovachev (GERD and EPP), which in the past gave the highest number of negative amendments to the Resolution on Macedonia, but we are glad that no other serious opponent of our country from the eastern neighbor did not enter in this important EP Committee for Macedonia.

From Bulgaria, despite Kovacev in AFET enter the representative of the Turkish party DPS, Kjuchjuk Ilhan, who is expected to not act with negative attitude towards the Macedonian people, language and nation.

On the other hand, the problem with Greek MEPs is still present. Apart from the general from neo-fascist “Golden Dawn”, the new MEPs in AFET from Greece became Nikos Androulakis (PASOK / SID), Manolis Kefaloyiannis (New Democracy / EPP) and Sofia Sakorafa (SYRIZA / GUE-NGL).

They are expected along with Kovachev to oppose to the use of the constitutional name of Republic of Macedonia, and the adjective “Macedonian” in the Resolution that is expected before the end of the year to be voted in the European Parliament based on the October-Progress Report of the European Commission on Macedonia’s progress in European integration.

On the other hand, large number of Macedonian friends in the AFET in the past, also remain part of the EP Committee on Foreign Affairs. Here is Tune Kelem (Estonia / EPP), Tonino Picula (Croatia / SID), Ivo Vajgl (ALDE) and Alois Peterle (EPP) from Slovenia, Edward Kukan (Slovakia / EPP) and Charles Tannock (ECR / UK).

New names in AFET, and full supporters of the Republic of Macedonia are Andrew Plenkovikj and Jozo Rados from Croatian Democratic Union and the European People’s Party. As a result of it, the current strong supporter of Macedonia in AFET – Davor Ivo Shtier (HDZ / EPP) entered in another committee.

What is certain is that the European Parliament Rapporteur for Macedonia will remain Richard Howitt (SID), which remained in AFET, representing the neutral UK regarding the enlargement of the EU, and the Labor Party, which is left-oriented.

This year’s EP Resolution on Macedonia and other potential candidates and candidates for EU membership is expected to be adopted by the end of this year, or it is possible at the beginning of 2015, after the in October, the  European Commission will publish the latest country-progress report.

In the past five years, the EC and the European Parliament issued positive statements and resolutions with recommendation for immediate start of negotiations for Macedonia’s EU membership, but because of the Greek blockade in the European Council, and due to the imposed name dispute – the country could not progress in European integration.
