No Climate in Greece for Macedonian Membership in NATO

Macedonian ministers of foreign affairs and defense underscored Friday at the meeting with the ambassadors of NATO members that Macedonia is prepared to join the largest military and political organization in the world expecting to receive an invitation at the upcoming NATO summit in Wales.

However, Nikola Poposki and Zoran Jolevski both noted that there was neither climate nor readiness in Greece -the only NATO country that has been blocking Macedonia's NATO membership since 2008 – to allow the country to join the Alliance, MIA reports from Brussels.

Ministers Poposki and Jolevski - the latter in his first official visit since taking office - attended in Brussels the annual meeting between Macedonia and the NATO North Atlantic Council at ambassadorial level as part of the 15th cycle of the Membership Action Plan (MAP).

"We've had the chance to share views with the ambassadors of NATO countries with respect to Macedonia's preparedness and the possibility of including the enlargement issue in the agenda of the September summit. Relating to preparedness, there is consensus that Macedonia had met all the criteria by 2008. What is missing is green light from one NATO member. In this respect, Macedonia's efforts have been recognized as truly important, however there is no conviction that there is an atmosphere and political commitment in Greece to settle the imposed dispute which is holding us back from NATO for almost six years," Minister Poposki told MIA.

Defense reforms, according to the new Minister Jolevski, are one of the most vital conditions for becoming a NATO member.

"All NATO ambassadors expressed satisfaction with the level of reforms in the Macedonian Army and its participation in the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan. I presented the plans for further reform of the Macedonian Army in a bid to strengthen the so called "smart defense," stated Jolevski.

During their visit to Brussels, the two ministers highlighted Macedonia's dedication to join NATO as soon as possible and its commitment for a dialogue with Greece.

Ministers Poposki and Jolevski at NATO HQ in Brussels met with NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow while the Macedonian Defense Minister also held a separate meeting with NATO's Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic.

The 15th cycle on the implementation of Macedonia's NATO membership action plan 2013-2014 was closed at the meeting.
