Volker: Greeks want to change all, including the Macedonians to change their constitution

A whole generation in Macedonia is poisoned by bitter feelings against Greece, which is branded as the culprit for all problems facing their country, said Greek Foreign Ministry spokesman Konstantinos Kutras for CNN in response to the Prime Minister Gruevski’s interview.

- If Skopje demonstrated the same degree of commitment, the name issue would be resolved, he added.

According Kutras, as MIA from Athens reports, many predecessors of Samaras met with Macedonian Prime Minister, but it was just a “photo opportunity and facade”. With this statement, he just confirmed that Greece shows interest just before the cameras, and that the Greek authorities have no intention to start a direct dialogue.

At the same time, Kurt Volker, former U.S. permanent representative to NATO, said for CNN that a change of the name is possible, but complete removal of the term “Macedonia” is not a subject of discussion.

- I think Macedonians have made this far and I think they are willing to make a deal for modified name in order to be recognized in international organizations, Walker said.

However, he added that “it does not go so far as the Greeks are insisting”.

- Greeks want to change all, including the Macedonians to change their constitution. It is just wishful thinking, it will never happen, the U.S. diplomat stressed.

Prime Minister Gruevski in an interview with CNN reiterated that the Greek government is not ready for talks on the name issue and it has been avoiding them. He informed that he personally has tried to get in touch with the Greek Prime Minister aiming direct negotiations, but he repeatedly refused the meetings.

He once again noted that several years ago, Macedonia was in court in The Hague and that the Court decided that Macedonia is right, and Greece is not.

- So, the international law is on our side. I believe that if Greece respects the international law, we can begin the negotiations with the EU and join NATO, the Prime Minister Gruevski said.
