UMD: Greece is the one that should accept European values and criteria

UMD reacts after the statement of the Greek Minister for Foreign Affairs Evangelos Venizelos, as well as to the Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dachikj for the name dispute and integration of Macedonia into the European Union.

Venizelos at the joint appearance with Dachikj in Brussels said that the name dispute is not an obstacle to negotiations for Macedonia, but it is “the lack of European values and the failure of the Copenhagen criteria” on the Macedonian side.

- Observations of Venizelos, in his new role as head of the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union is unfounded, because the European Commission five years in row gives proposal to the Council to start negotiations with Macedonia. On the same day on joint press conference between the EU, Serbia and the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament passed Resolution that calls the Greek Presidency to take leading role to resolve the bilateral dispute with Macedonia and the Council to set date for commencement of negotiations for accession of Macedonia. UMD believes that Greece should make efforts to adopt European values supposedly shared and to ratify the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities and to provide basic human rights for Macedonian, Turkish and other minorities, and to end the old Lausanne Treaty, said Philip Altiparmakovski, the Director of European operations of UMD.

At a joint press conference in Brussels, Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dachikj was asked if he would mediate to overcome the dispute between Macedonia and Greece, and he answered that would do it if he is asked by the Greek “friends and brothers.” From UMD consider, instead focus on the name dispute, Serbia should dedicate to their own problems such as the status of Kosovo and the uncompromising attitude of the Republic of Srpska in Bosnia.

- Greece and Macedonia should begin direct talks to improve bilateral relations. As a gesture of goodwill, Venizelos should make official visit to Macedonia as soon as possible, said Meto Koloski President of UMD.
