“Dnevnik”: Samaras fled from duel with Gruevski

Athens has recently rejected another offer for a direct meeting between the prime ministers of Greece and Macedonia, Antonis Samaras and Nikola Gruevski, who would have been moderated by a representative of the European Commission, “Dnevnik” reports.

German diplomat, Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger, few months ago sent letters to both Prime Ministers to participate in this year’s Munich security conference, where they could have discussed the name issue on a panel discussion.

Diplomatic sources have confirmed for “Dnevnik” that the invitation was sent by Ischinger, who is chairman of the Munich conference. According to newspaper sources, Ischinger proposed a special discussion on the name issue, which would have been held on February 2 this year on the last day of the Munich conference.

Despite Samaras and Gruevski, EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule would have been invited, who would have acted as a moderator, and other participants of the panel are not mentioned. The panel discussion is planned to take place from 9 to 10 at the hotel “Bayerischer Hof” in Munich where the conference, which opens on January 31, will be held.

“Dnevnik” unofficially found that Samaras rejected the invitation, and the reasons are not known to the public.

Macedonian government confirmed the information for Dnevnik that Gruevski received a letter from Ischinger and that Prime Minister immediately consented to the idea.
