Thessaloniki mayor angers Greeks with photo in front of signboard with the name Macedonia

Thessaloniki. Greek media criticised the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Yiannis Boutaris, who during his visit to Skopje took part in a press conference where there was a signboard reading “Economic Chamber of Macedonia”, Macedonian Sitel TV reported.
The media in Greece were surprised that Boutaris agreed to speak at the presence of such a signboard.
The photo incited a wave of reactions and commentaries in the media.
Mayor Boutaris’ cabinet, on the other hand, said that the mayor had not seen what the signboard read.

Greek political parties also attacked Yiannis Boutaris because of the photo taken in front of the signboard with the name “Macedonia”, Macedonian online news edition Maxim reported.
According to the Independent Greeks party, this way Boutaris accepted Skopje’s propaganda.
The Golden Dawn party, on the other hand, declared Boutaris a traitor, who recognised Skopje as Macedonia.

The mayor of Thessaloniki, a politician not typical of the Balkans, visited this week Skopje, accompanied by Greek businessmen, Macedonain online news edition Vest wrote.
The author of the article remarked that Boutaris, who was not wearing a necktie but had leather bracelets and a tattoo on his hand, did not look like a person in charge of Greece’s second biggest city.
Vest also remarked that his connections with Macedonia were of sentimental nature as his grandfather came from the town of Krusevo and he also had many friends in Macedonia.
“I have lost my connections to Krusevo but I have visited it three times. I saw my grandfather’s hosue. I was pround. This is where I came from,” Mr Boutaris said.

In Thessaloniki Yiannis Boutaris stated that neighbouring countries needed to live together, remarking that problems existed and would exist and would be solved if people had the determination to do so, Voice of America Radio informed.
When asked whether Greece would block Macedonian EU integration at a forthcoming meeting in Thessaloniki, Mr Boutaris remarked: “I am not a politician who is involved in foreign affairs, yet Greece is not the country which bans EU accession, this is common decision taken by the European Union.”
