Poposki: Greece blames others while running away from responsibility

In the criteria for membership in NATO is not mentioned that you should change the name to be part of the Alliance. Greece again blames the Member States.

This is the comment of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Macedonia, Nikola Poposki, after the meeting with the North Atlantic Council (NAC) of NATO in Brussels today, in terms of the information that yesterday opened debate on the possible admission of Macedonia to the next year‘s summit which will be held in Great Britain, the Greek Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos reacted fiercely on this information, MIA reports.

According to a statement from the Greek Foreign Ministry, Evangelos Venizelos told to his fellow heads of diplomacy of the member States of the Alliance, that Macedonia does not enter NATO because of not meeting the criteria for NATO, and not because of the bilateral relations with Greece.

- I think that this is not the first time our southern neighbor to blame others for the problem which is classical interference and violation of international legal framework, established by the Interim Agreement on the entire alliance. It is running away from responsibility, blaming the other Member States. After the International Court of Justice verdict, the cause of this behavior is clearly located and it is the only reliable and independent source for finding a solution, Minister Poposki said in a statement to MIA.

According him, Macedonia will be entering into certain situations that would be created by our southern neighbor, in order to create the perception of some conflicts and disagreements that may be used further delay of our membership.

-  The International Court of Justice made it clear about the constructive and proactive attitude by participants in that impose bilateral dispute. The most important thing is that nowhere in the criteria for membership in NATO is not mentioned that we should change the name to be part of the Alliance. What is also important for us is to really work together because Greece is one of our key partners towards achieving a solution to the bilateral issues, but also for regional cooperation. I think that we need to focus our energy future in cooperation with Greece, added Poposki.

At the same time, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Vesna Pusić, today stated that it is possible for Macedonia to join NATO at the NATO Summit next year.

- Despite the conclusions of the summit in Chicago that it is the last summit without expanding, but we managed to change that because it is too early to say that no one is ready to become a new member. Secretariat of NATO is obliged to prepare an assessment of the readiness of the candidate. Our view is that Montenegro is ready and we also believe that Macedonia is also a country that is ready, which should work so it can be ready for membership until the ninth month of 2014. We’ll see how it goes, but in the case of Montenegro, the chances are very good, Pusić said.

- The second issue is the form of help for the ISAF Mission, by the countries participating in the mission after 2014 and here was noted about the main question about the composition of the fund, i.e. how much money will be allocated to the fund and how will it be managed, according to the rules that are supposed to regulate the presence of any military force in the upcoming period in Afghanistan, says the Minister Poposki, adding that Macedonia is one of the biggest contributors within the NATO mission despite not being a full member of the Alliance.

- This argument is a clear signal, about the commitment of the Republic of Macedonia to the successful implementation of this project, said Poposki.
