Gruevski for Financial Times: A pressure on Greece is necessary

Possibilities for resolving the Greek- Macedonian dispute over the name is the worst in the last 18 months, and to come to decision an intervention from the United States and the leading forces in Europe is necessary, pointed out the Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski for the interview with the Financial Times, informs Republika.

He emphasized that the Greek and Macedonian governments have made certain progress towards compromise, during the mandate of the Prime Minister of Greece, the socialist George Papandreou in Athens in period from 2009 to 2011, but this progress has went in reverse direction with the arrival of conservative Antonis Samaras in June 2012.

- The situation can be unblocked if Greece comes under pressure from countries like the U.S., Germany and France. But if this do not happens, then it will not happen, stated Gruevski for the Financial Times. As Financial Times writes, Gruevski blamed Samaras and accused him for taking “one of the most radical positions that Greece ever had in the history of the problem.” This debate paralyzes the integration of Macedonia in the economic and security structures in Europe i.e. Greece blocked the young state to enter into NATO and the European Union (EU). Macedonia is a candidate for accession to the EU since 2005, but formal negotiations for membership have never begun, writes Financial Times.

At the same time, the neighbors of Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Greece in particular, watched with concern as Nikola Gruevski, Prime Minister since 2006 and his ruling party have adopted stronger nationalism, which glorifies the Macedonians at the expense of ethnic minorities in the state, writes British newspaper.

Furthermore, the Financial Times reported that the controversial architectural redesign of Skopje, capital of Macedonia, includes a colossal statue of Alexander the Great and his father Philip II of Macedonia, that are celebrated as symbols of the new state, on behalf of Greeks’ anger, who uphold them as ancient Greek heroes.

According to the Financial Times, Gruevski denies that the project, which is known as Skopje in 2014 and the price of several hundred million euro, is responsible for enhancing the Greek position for the name dispute.

“Ever since we created our own country, we thought that it will be good to have 20 or 30 statues of people from our history. Our idea was not to cause problems with the Greeks,” stated Gruevski.

On the question what pressure he would like to see over Greece, Gruevski said that the Great Powers should remind Athens that the International Court of Justice, without interfering in the name dispute, in 2011 decided that Greece was not right when blocked the application of Macedonia for membership in NATO three years previously, writes Financial Times.

“I would like to see pressure that would lead in direction of upholding the decision of the ICJ. I ask for upholding international law. Otherwise, what is the point of the court and what is the point of the international law?” asked Macedonian Prime Minister.

The latest proposals for resolving the name dispute were presented in April by the Matthew Nimetz, the American diplomat who serves as Special Representative of the UN for this matter. He pointed out that the state has to go by the name “Gorna Makedonija” in multinational relations, but that the countries may use the term Republic Macedonia in bilateral relations with Skopje, if that is their choice.

These proposals were rejected by Greece, which made it clear that they want single name for all applications and insisted on the idea of the Republic of Upper Macedonia, but these proposals were unacceptable for Gruevski and his government, concludes the Financial Times
