Faion: Greece to compromise on Macedonia

True move would be Greece as EU president to compromise on Macedonia, which would give positive signal for expansion.

However, it depends on political leaders, says MEP Tanja Fajon.

- It is true that the expansion is not on the agenda while Greece holds the EU presidency. However, would not renounced efforts and attempts of Macedonia to resolve the name dispute. As soon as possible. For me it would be the right move if Greece while holds the EU presidency, 10 years after the Summit in Thessaloniki and the largest expansion in the history of Europe, makes compromise with Macedonia. It would be a positive signal for the entire expansion, and the feeling and relations between the citizens of the country. However, it depends on political leaders, stated for Deutsche Welle the MEP Tanja Fajon, which attended conference for Western Balkans in Berlin when she was asked for comment for the situation with Macedonia before the December summit of the European Council.

She echoed the mood of European Parliament for Macedonia, which again gace recommendation to the heads of states and governments of EU finally to open accession negotiations.

In relation to the announcements for new blockade of Macedonia’s way to Europe by Greece, Fajon says she does not want to speculate what will happen in the next six months, and wanted only to comment on the facts.

- Something is still safe. Atmosphere to resolve the name dispute is not positive. It would be excellent opportunity if Greece, as chairman of the Union makes step toward positive symbolic message that the expansion will continue. Of course, the Macedonian government should make a step forward, but seems it has no energy. As everything else, this is priority. I do not want to blame no one, but it is really pity, because in this situation citizens of Macedonia lose. If there is blockade from one side, and on the other side bad economic and financial situation, unemployment, social problems, then door for nationalism and Euro-skepticism is opened. In addition, it is very dangerous for the country, which seeks to join the Europe and has one purpose – European integration, warns Faion.

The EU Commissioner Füle idea for opening accession negotiations of Macedonia with the EU, while simultaneously is solving the name dispute with Greece, he said, looks like a real possibility. But, he said, considering the experience of dispute between Slovenia and Croatia on the outstanding border issues and the former Ljubljana Bank, he considers that is better solved these things separately and directly between the two countries.

- Of course, the EU should help both countries to reach the agreement, but I think that Macedonia and Greece should make step forward towards mutual direction. My feeling now is that Macedonia is not doing its best to resolve the issue now, and due to poor environment and difficult economic situation neither does Greece, points out Faion.

According to her, time is lost, and Macedonia today can do much, if continues the intensive work on reforms, which would then shorten the duration of the entire accession process.

- The situation is not favorable nor in Europe, but my desire is Macedonia as soon as possible to start the accession negotiations, concluded Tanja Fajon, Member of European Parliament.
