Nuland: The name dispute depends only on Macedonia and Greece

The name dispute between Macedonia and Greece will not be in the focus of the U.S. diplomacy, nor the mandate of the new Assistant Secretary for Europe Victoria Nuland.

Nuland said that she personally invested much energy in resolving the dispute between Macedonia and Greece in the past, but at this point the decision is of the two countries, not the U.S.

- Concerning Macedonia, I in the past, especially the 2008 NATO Summit in Bucharest, personally roll up my sleeves. I remember meeting with the Prime Minister Gruevski and Greek leaders in my living room when trying to resolve the dispute. I believe there are two or more formulations which should be able to be acceptable to both sides. It is about a dialogue, leadership and choice between the two parties. Certainly, we will continue to support the process of Nimitz, but only you can make decisions, said Nuland, who was U.S. ambassador to NATO during the Bucharest summit and therefore directly involved in the talks for Macedonia.

She stressed that the U.S. and Europe are now focused on the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius, where the key question is whether a decision will be made to start the integration process for Ukraine, which is expected to release the former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko for treatment abroad. At the strategic level of relations with Europe, Nuland said the U.S. need a renaissance in the relations with Europe, but she sent and dire warnings about the economic crisis, criticism of U.S. spying on European leaders and especially the cutting of means that Europe allocates for defense.

- I was floored that we have allies who think they can continue to sleep peacefully, and it would cost them cheap, becoming cheaper and cheaper, Nuland said, and added that the interest in NATO is much decreased and the organization no longer figures highly in the discussions.

Main project between Washington and Brussels will still be efforts to agree on establishing a free trade zone TTIP, which would help both sides to get out of economic crisis.

Nuland come to office this summer, as favorite of diplomats and experts in Washington, but also heavily criticized by the opposition Republican Party because of the way she presents the information from the attack on the embassy in Benghazi. She announced that the focus of her work will be the Middle East. In this regard, Nuland explained part of the re – organization of her department, which is responsible for U.S. relations with Europe.
