Linkevichius: Macedonia is constructive in the name negotiations

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Linas Linkevicius in the interview for Kanal 5 said that Macedonia has made great progress in reforms and efforts to resolve the name dispute.

- One of our priorities is open Europe, but also more reliable and bigger Europe. We should continue keeping contacts with all countries that want to join the European Union. Your country is one of them and I ‘m here to show solidarity and support and to welcome the progress made so far. I hope that the Report will be positive. This recommendation even thought will be the fifth in a row, it is important. I do not know how many times we repeat, but it is better to remind ourselves. Therefore, we will continue on the same way, says Linkevichius.

The Lithuanian Minister pledges commitment to bring closer Skopje and Athens to a solution. He was personally informed for the name dispute from the mediator Nimetz in New York and about the latest developments in the negotiations.

- It’s easy to say, hard to do it, but we have to reach such agreement. I believe it is possible. I welcome the involvement of the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki -moon and his statement and his will to help. Everyone would like to see progress. If you prosper with this issue, perhaps you would remove most of the obstacles on your long way not only to Europe but also to the Euro – Atlantic integration, pointed Linkevichius.

According to him, it is understandable de-motivation prevailing among Macedonian citizens due to excessive waiting to begin with the negotiations with the EU.

- We, as Lithuanians, not only as the presidency, would like the Balkans to be part of the Euro – Atlantic family, it is important not only for you but also for Europe. Who would deny it? But I would like to repeat there is no one else that can do the reforms instead of you. You should understand that you wait a long journey and you should not lose motivation. I know it is sometimes hard, it lasts long, to repeat cycles of dialogues to join NATO and the implementation of the Membership Action Plan, adds Linkevichius in the interview.
