Poposki : Decision under the United Nations and the International Court of Justice

Macedonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikola Poposki respond to the statement of the Greek Minister Evangelos Venizelos, who considered the only solution for the name dispute must be erga omnes, i.e. Macedonia to adopt a new name for all uses.

- I think the most important at this point before giving such statements and opinions is to look at the framework of the United Nations that resolves this issue and look for the opinion of the most competent body – the International Court of Justice, which clearly defines what can or cannot be done. First of all we should remember that we are two democratic countries who are committed to the rule of law and respect the international norms. If this is true, I think it would be much easier to address these issues, said the Minister Poposki .

Earlier, Venizelos refused to answer the question of MIA about his statement yesterday, where he repeated the Greek red lines in the name dispute and left no room for discussion.

Martin Nesirky, the Secretary General of United Nations Ban Ki – moon’s spokesman, informed in his briefing that in a few weeks a new meeting for the name dispute can be expected. Zoran Jolevski and Adamantios Vassilakis will meet in New York at the invitation of the Ambassador Matthew Nimetz, , according to Nesirky, the UN Secretary General Ban hopes that this meeting will lead to a convergence of views.

Macedonian delegation at the General Assembly of the United Nations today launched a number of bilateral and multilateral meetings. The head of the delegation, Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, will attend a formal reception organized by the U.S. President Barack Obama.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikola Poposki has met with the OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand Murray McCall and addressed at the ministerial meeting of the Organization of the Francophonie and at the high meeting dedicated to the Millennium Development Goals.
