Ivanov: Samaras' letter confirms we cannot negotiate with Greece

The letter of Greek PM Samaras confirmed that Macedonia has no interlocutor in the name issue talks, said President Gjorge Ivanov on Friday.

According to him, nothing else could be expected from a man who created the problem 20 years ago and now wanted to get away from its settlement.

"There is no one to reach a solution with. The only way to overcome misunderstandings is dialogue, which is avoided. Every initiative on our part is met with negative response from the Greek side", President Ivanov told reporters.

He referred to the Croatia-Slovenia model as a successful way of solving problems in the region, through dialogue.

"Slovenia, being an EU member, was forced to act in a European manner towards the candidate-country. However, Slovenia and Croatia agreed to solve the problem in parallel with the accession talks, and later reached a solution", added Ivanov.

He said a meeting of top officials with the opposition on the name issue would he held if required.

"The top officials are in continual communication and the public will be duly informed on any new developments. If required, there will be meetings with other political parties too", underlined President Ivanov.

Former Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki viewed the letter as a failed attempt by the Greek Government to point the finger to Brussels and blame all EU blockades on Brussels and not Athens.
"What Samaras hasn't done is read the decision by the ICJ in Hague. In it, it is clearly stated Greece is the country blocking Macedonia, not the EU. Sadly, Athens in a rather amateurish way is attempting to create a quarrel between Skopje and Brussels." stated Milososki.
