Greek Media: US in negotiations with Athens over Macedonia

"Stability" is the codename of the U.S. secret plan that will start to unwind prior to the elections in Germany, with the ultimate objective of altering the Greek debt repayment period up to 2063, reads Greek daily "Dimokratia" citing diplomatic sources from Washington, media has reported from Athens.

According to the newspaper, the Americans have lost their patience with Germany, considering it a luxury the wait until the spring of 2014 for talks over reduction of the Greek debt. Taking into account the situation in Syria, Egypt and Turkey, the United States still believe Greece is the oasis of stability despite its problems, therefore deciding to act in the time of Germany's election campaign.

"Credible information from senior diplomatic sources say the U.S. departments of state, defense and treasury are developing a comprehensive plan for Greece's final exit from the crisis, which contains several points referring to the period of the debt repayment, change of interest rates and establishment of an investment solidarity fund according to the Norwegian model... The United States, via the IMF, sends messages to Germany that the Greek case should be closed as soon as possible through a package deal involving the debt, energy, the exclusive economic zone, and the issues of Skopje and Cyprus", says "Dimokratia".

According to the paper, the Americans believe this is "the ideal time" to close the Skopje issue and Macedonia to join NATO.

"Of course, nothing comes for free in international diplomacy...Diplomatic sources have noted that firstly, Samaras has transferred the trading burden and will sacrifice everything to secure a name erga omnes. Secondly, in his recent speech at the New Democracy Congress, he did not mention a geographic qualifier, urging Skopians to renounce from irredentism and agree on a name that will not touch upon the Greek character of Greek Macedonia", reads "Dimokratia".

The plan's uncovering is not by coincidence, since PM Samaras is set to meet with U.S. President Barack Obama on August 8. It is also no coincidence that Samaras brings Finance Minister Stournaras and Foreign Minister Venizelos to Washington, the former responsible for issues related to the debt and investments, whereas the latter a strong supporter of U.S. and Israel's ties.

"A major part of the U.S. agenda coincides with the one of Samaras regarding the Greek EU Presidency. Despite its problems, Greece is attempting to demonstrate itself as a leading force on the Balkans, and that is why it will promote Albania and Skopje's (presuming a solution to the name row is reached) candidacies for EU accession, but it is also taking new steps in its relations with Serbia and Bulgaria", underlines daily "Dimokratia".
