Klaus urges Greece to accept joint currency with Macedonia
Outgoing Czech President Vaclav Klaus has jokingly recommended Greece to accept a joint currency with Macedonia as a way out of the financial problems and overcoming of the name row.
Klaus referred to the economic crisis in Europe at the Washington-based libertarian Cato Institute debate, recommending Greece to abandon the EU.
With regards to the Greek veto to Macedonia's integration process, Klaus said he would refrain from giving strong statements.
"I remember the NATO Summit in Bucharest, when all heads of states spent eight hours in the night trying to convince Greece to change its stance. I took part in that debate and I don't know what to say. Maybe you should have a single currency with Greece as a solution to the problem", he added.
Klaus recommended essential changes in the EU and the way of its functioning, in order to save the European project, saying certain countries should be excluded from the eurozone.
"I don't believe EU should break up, but it needs to reform. However, we are at a crossroad and cannot continue like this. I believe it is possible for several countries to leave and everything will be better", stressed the outgoing Czech President.
