Greek FM Avramopoulos on political developments in Macedonia

Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos has expressed restraint over expectations from the new round of talks on the Macedonia name issue, mediated by UN envoy Matthew Nimetz.

"The political crisis and elections in Skopje point to restraint. The crisis has confirmed what we had said when the European Commission report was released last year - it is dangerous to hide problems under the rug", Avramopoulos told daily "Kathimerini".

According to him, a functional democracy in line with EU standards does not only involve adoption of laws.

"Reforms must be implemented in practice", says Avramopoulos, adding the Greek authorities want stability and a functional democratic system prevailing in the neighboring country.

The Greek FM also refers to the Memorandum of Understanding forwarded to the Macedonian authorities, saying it is the reason for the process' dynamics.

"Most of our partners acknowledge our constructive position. This was reflected in the unanimous decision in December, which called for the name issue's settlement prior to the start of EU accession talks", stresses Avramopoulos.
