Greece takes third place in EU poverty study

Greece is among the European Union's countries facing the greatest poverty issues according to a comparative research study carried out by Germany's Institute for Economic Research.

According to the institute's data, Bulgaria and Romania led the poverty indicators, followed by Greece and Latvia. The research was conducted during the 2010-2011 period, the Greek daily Kathimerini reports.

The countries faced with the continent's lowest poverty problems were Denmark, followed by Sweden, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria and Germany.

In its research the institute defines poverty as based on relative income poverty indicators affecting those who earn less than 60 percent of the country’s average, along with factors such as subjective income poverty as well as deprivation and other financial constraints.

The unemployed, unmarried parents and immigrants were those facing the greatest poverty issues
