UN mediator Nimetz to meet Macedonian, Greek name negotiators on Jan. 29-30

UN envoy in Macedonian-Greek name dispute negotiations Matthew Nimetz will have a new round of talks with the representatives of both countries, Zoran Jolevski and Adamantios Vassilakis respectively, on January 29-30 in New York.

Nimetz will have separate and joint talks with Jolevski and Vassilakis, the UN Press Service said.

The inviation for resuming the talks comes after recent visit of the UN mediator to Macedonia and Greece, which took place on 9-11 January. Then he said he was encouraged by the talks in Skopje and Athens, announcing more intensive name negotiations in New York. Nimetz said would invite the Macedonian and Greek negotiators to New York so he could follow up ideas raised during his visits to Skopje and Athens. Those were constructive and thoughtful ideas and we would see whether we could move forward, Nimetz said.

Macedonia expects for Nimetz to intensify his engagement and step up the name negotiations, President Gjorge Ivanov said ahead of the new round of talks in New York.

In the meantime, EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule proposed a trilateral meeting with the Foreign Ministers of both countries, Nikola Poposki and Dimitris Avramopoulos, which would give the European Commission direct insight into the name issue negotiations and build on the conclusions on Macedonia from the December summit of the European Council.

Macedonia has welcomed the proposal as beneficial and one that offers and opportunity for further building of confidence between the two countries.

Official Athens has rejected it, saying that there is no need of trilateral meeting in this phase, as the Greek side looks forward to the upcoming meeting of the representatives of the two sides with UN envoy Matthew Nimetz in New York to ascertain the extent to which there are prospects for progress.
