Greek Tsipras says no Macedonians in Greece

Alexis Tsipras, leader of the Greek radical left party SYRIZA, has said in Washington there are no Macedonians in Greece when asked about the country's policy on the rights of Macedonians and other ethnic communities.

"There are Macedonians in Greece?", asked Tsipras instead of answering the question.

After he was told by his entourage that the question refers to 'Skopians'*, the SYRIZA leader said his party worked on solution to the name issue with a geographic qualifier.

"At the same time, I believe the problem is if someone in FYROM or Greece promotes differences and nationalistic issues", added Tsipras.

The SYRIZA leader delivered an address at the Washington-based Brookings Institute.
"We want peace and cooperation with neighbors, but this depends from mutual acceptance of international law rules. We have differences, which should be settled through dialogue. Relations with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia must be ones of cooperation. We have nothing to fear from a small neighboring country on the north. Our differences with regards to the name must be settled in the context of a mutually acceptable solution with a geographic qualifier. This is what party Synaspismos had said in the early 1990s, which Mr. Samaras, who was foreign minister at the time, did not share", stressed Tsipras.
According to him, the name is not the main concern in the relations with Macedonia, but nationalism.
"We believe nationalism is the biggest enemy of peaceful coexistence and friendship between states. We are very concerned when seeing nationalistic parties leading a neighboring country, drawing irredentist policies, which should belong to the past", said Tsipras.
