Greece Will Crack Down On Corruption Yet Again

Greeks have heard it before, but the government – faced with growing pressure from international lenders to go after tax cheats and end a culture of graft or face more austerity measures – is planning another of its frequent wars on corruption. A bill is set to be filed by the Justice Ministry on Jan. 21 which aims to crack down on people unlawfully acquiring wealth and squandering public resources. It comes as Transparency International has ranked Greece the most corrupt country in Europe, where bribes are common and expected for everything from getting hospital care to driver’s licenses. Justice Minister Antonis Roupakiotis said the legislation calls for harsher penalties on state officials and civil servants, but also on self-employed professionals like doctors and engineers if they are found to have income they haven’t stated. It’s a traditional practice for professionals, as well as other self-employed business owners, to do work and not give a receipt so that they can hide their income.
