FM POPOSKI: STEFAN FULE'S PROPOSAL IS POSITIVE

A positive proposal that could only contribute to additionally strengthening the countries' trust, said Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki commenting the initiative by EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule regarding a trilateral meeting with Greece's Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos.

The initiative will not affect the UN-brokered name talks, according to him. "It is expected to maintain the credibility of EU integration, which is of key importance for the European Commission."

"I think everybody is interested in maintaining the credibility of EU integration without an exception. Each EU member has an interest in preserving the credibility and it needs to be maintained by those who challenged it in the past. Macedonia as a candidate country has an interest to act as a constructive partner in constructing a dialogue enabling us to lift unprincipled obstacles erected in the past. I believe it is a good thing that there is communication and it is logical decisions to be made during Ireland's EU presidency that would preserve the credibility in our interest, in the interest of member countries and the European Commission of course," Poposki said.

The FM stated that the upcoming meeting in New York between UN name mediator Matthew Nimetz and the countries' representatives, Zoran Jolevski and Adamantios Vassilakis, was seen as positive move in an effort to accelerate the process.

Referring to the opposition's boycott of the Parliament, FM Poposki noted that institutional dialogue was the right way to overcome political differences with Macedonia's EU integration serving as a guide in reaching decisions.

"It is up to us and our political stakeholders to respect the principles promoted by the EU itself, such as institutional dialogue. I believe that the EU agenda should be our top priority guiding us in the decision-making process in the future," Poposki said when asked whether the country was in line with its EU agenda following the visit by Stefano Saninno, the European Commission Director-General for Enlargement.

Earlier in the day, Deutsche Welle reported that EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule has sent a letter to the foreign ministers of Macedonia and Greece - Nikola Poposki and Dimitris Avramopoulos - suggesting a fresh framework with which the European Commission would ensure a direct insight into the name talks.

Fule has suggested a trilateral meeting to be organised, including him, Avramopoulos and Poposki.

The EU Commissioner has asked both parties to appoint representatives, whereas Stefano Saninno will serve as his personal representative.

Fule's new framework aims at upgrading the conclusions on Macedonia reached by the Council of the EU in December.
