Greece will likely block Macedonia once again

It seems that Greece once again will block Macedonia in obtaining a date for start of accession negotiations with the European Union, Macedonian media reports from Athens.

Even though some Greek media over the weekend reported that Athens will endorse a date but under certain conditions, the Foreign Ministry spokesman Grigoris Delavekouras has stated that Greece's position remains unchanged - first a mutually acceptable solution must be found.

Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos tomorrow in Brussels will take part in a meeting of the EU's General Affairs Council (GAC), where the enlargement policy will be considered. On Tuesday, GAC is also set to discuss whether and when Macedonia will open the membership negotiations with the Union, after EU ambassadors last week failed to adopt conclusions over Macedonia in relation to the EC proposal for setting a date for start of negotiations.

Macedonia is an EU candidate country since 2005. In 2009, the European Commission assessed that the country had met the political criteria recommending opening of membership talks. The recommendation was reiterated in 2010, 2011 and 2012. This year's report also included the adjective 'Macedonian' after it was omitted for two years.

Regarding the use of the adjective, MoFA's spokesman at a recent press briefing said that "these terms should not be used, because the use of 'Macedonian' is directly linked to the name issue and ongoing talks."

Diplomatic sources say that Europe is losing its patience involving Athens' behaviour when it comes to the name issue with Macedonia.

EU officials are attempting to help Greece on two fronts, the Cyprus issue and now Macedonia. As Athens has virtually no chance with Turkey on the Cyprus issue, EU officials are sympathetic to Greece and use Macedonia as a 'winning battle' to mask the lost cause that is Cyprus.

During a heated discussion whether Macedonia should receive accession date, the Austrian Ambassador at the EU was interrupted and verbally attacked by his Greek colleague Sotiropoulos who speaking German said to him "Long gone are the days when Austria imposed its will on the Balkans".

The bizarre reaction by the Greek Ambassador shocked the other 26 Ambassadors who called on Sitoropoulos to sit down and watch his manners. The French Ambassador Philippe Etienne reacted to calm down Sitoropoulos after which the Cypriot presidency ended the discussion.
According

to French Media, despite being on its knees in every sense, Greece will do everything in its power to block Macedonia, particularly with Samaras as its PM who back in the early 1990's created the name issue in the first place.

The irony is, by the time Macedonia gets accession date to enter the EU, the EU itself may not exist. The UK Government is already boycotting anything EU related, London will never give up its currency or sovereignty to Brussels and Berlin. Denmark has put its border and customs ramps while Poland and the Czechs have a free get-out card from the EU... The only nations that currently need the EU, in other words EU's handouts are the heavily indebted countries Greece, Portugal, Spain and Italy.
