Greeks Nervous, Lose Temper during a Press Conference at the UN

Greek envoy to resolve the name dispute Adamantios Vassilakis surprised attendees at a press conference held in New York at the end of a two-day round of talks on the name dispute with his nervous and at times bizarre approach.

The Press conference was held in one of the UN buildings by East River. There was great interest for this press conference, in particularly after Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited Macedonia and personally called Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras to urge Greece to become more active in resolving the dispute.

Macedonian negotiator Zoran Jolevski, on behalf of the Macedonian government, thanked mediator Matthew Nimetz, and Ban Ki-moon for their initiative to overcome the two-decade long dispute.

But Greek negotiator Vassilakis first violently react even to the first question, the Macedonian Television, on the recommendation of the European Commission to begin negotiations without resolving the name dispute. Vassilakis interrupted the question and did not allow Nimetz to answer until he read his pre-prepared text that promoted the so called "Greek draft memorandum" painting Greece as the constructive side.

Nimetz rolling his eyes, reminded Vassilakis that there is a protocol, and it was he who only spoke on these press conferences. Nimitz stressed that EU integration is a separate issue from the name talks, but said that highly respect the initiative of the European Commission in which they recommended opening negotiations.

- The two sides expressed their willingness to overcome the dispute, I believe that it is not just rhetoric. The region also looks to solution on this problem. Intermediaries will bring these ideas to their governments, to see if it can be helpful to go ahead. I offered to come to visit Athens and Skopje to express more of the detailed proposals, Nimetz said.

Ambassador Jolevski said that Macedonia is ready to resolve this dispute with a mutually acceptable solution that would respect the Macedonian identity, dignity, but will also respect international law, reminiscent of Greek violation of the Interim Agreement. That issue, the Interim Agreement and the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Nimitz answers at the end of the conference.

- We all know the importance of the International Court of Justice and the importance to respect its decisions, Nimetz said.

However, despite being warned by Nimetz, Greece's Vassilakis continued his unprofessional conduct and put on a show. Asked for more information about the memorandum, Vassilakis recommended to journalists to visit the Internet site of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs. At the end, the question of the Macedonian Information Agency correspondent about what we can expect from the December Council of the European Union, Vassilakis lost his temper and asked "What is this European Union you speak of" and "why is this important to you".
