Wikileaks: Greece wants Macedonia to use name with geographic term for internal use, too
WikiLeaks published another package of wires connected to the Macedonian-Greek relations, writes Macedonian Vecer daily.
According to the newspaper, the documents showed Greece’s firm position on the name dispute, and namely on a name with geographic term, which Macedonia to adopt for internal use, too.
The wires were of US Ambassador to Athens Daniel Speckhard sent on August 20, 2011. At a meeting with then Minister of Foreign Affairs Dimitrios Droutsas the US diplomat said that Washington was interested in the root of the matter and there was a need to discuss the details, which Athens was ready to accept.
The US believed that the major elements of the agreement were a geographic term, acknowledgement of the rights of the two countries in international context and leaving the identity outside the agreement.
