MEP Lulling: no understating for Greece’s position regarding the name

Macedonia must not be blocked on its road to the EU due to the name problem, Astrid Lulling, MEP and member of Christian Social People's Party in Luxembourg, said speaking about the EU enlargement process towards the Balkans.

Greece’s blockade on Macedonia’s European integration due to the name is incomprehensible, Lulling said.

I have no understating regarding this problem. I cannot see why Greece is doing all this only because of the name. I cannot understand this. As I said I am not an expert for the Balkans but still I can say with regret that all this about the name is exaggerating. Macedonia is a country that has European vocation and is a European state. So, because of this it should not be blocked in the European integration processes, Lulling said.

She gave the example with Luxembourg which is at the same time a state and a region with the similar tumultuous past as Macedonia.

In the EU there are no borders and we have good relations with our neighbours. Without our neighbours Luxembourg would not exist, Lulling said.

Now after the war that happened in the former Yugoslavia, I think that countries that emerged from it, but also we, have understood that they belong to Europe. Certainly, there are many things to be done and for us also countries to be prepared, but I think that the future of these countries is in the European Union, Lulling said for Deutsche Welle.

Regarding the question whether Europe is prepared to admit new member state, Lulling said that there is a problem now that we are 27 member states and soon with Croatia we will be 28, but we have earlier said prior to great enlargement in 2004, it is necessary EU to deepen before enlarging.

Lulling believes and has hopes for the future of Europe. I hope that we will strengthen what we have, European construction and the common market. Many speak about United European States, but I do not believe that it would be achieved very soon, but if we continue with the European integration as we had done in the past 50 years. Politicians must follow us we in the European Parliament have majority to head to bigger European integration. But it is necessary countries to follow us, she explained and expressed regrets that Europe lacks visionary persons.
