After Hague, Greek Politicians Won't Meet Face to Face

The latest round of talks between United Nations envoy Matthew Nimetz for settlement of the Macedonia-Greece name issue with countries' negotiators Zoran Jolevski and Adamantios Vassilakis respectively, has not resulted in concrete steps forward towards a solution, says the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"In this context, we regret the absence of a joint meeting between the two parties. We wish the spirit of constructive dialogue and cooperation to prevail as the only way to overcome the difference. Republic of Macedonia remains firmly committed in providing dynamics to the dialogue at all levels towards finding a solution to this bilateral dispute", reads the MoFA press release.

Ambassador Zoran Jolevski met with mediator Nimetz in New York on Monday and Tuesday, focusing on making progress in overcoming differences over the name issue.

"These talks were held in line with the 1995 Interim Accord, according to which both sides have agreed to resume talks under UN aegis. This meeting also represented a possibility for talks for the first time after the historic judgment by the International Court of Justice of 5 December 2011, ruling that Greece violated the Accord by opposing Macedonia's NATO accession", says the MoFA.

Following the Hague ruling, Greek politicians have repeatedly refused to meet with their Macedonian colleagues. Similar story unfolded at the UN, with Greek negotiators insisting that each party meets with Nimetz separately. The Hague ruling turned into a major embarassment for Greek diplomacy.
