Gruevski: Greece Shows No Interest for Discussions at any level

Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski considers that Saturday’s responds by the Greek PM Lucas Papademos and President of the Greece’s New Democracy party Antonis Samaras are the most radical positions of Greece in its history regarding the name issue.

The positions presented by its Prime Minister and Samaras' refusal to meet are acts which point out that they have no intention to deal with joint problems. They avoid meetings in every way and on every possible level, PM Gruevski said answering journalist question after cornerstone laying ceremony for construction of new “Stiv Naumov” student dormitory in Skopje.

If the international community puts pressure on the Greeks, Prime Minister Gruevski believes according to intentions they have showed thus far, they would pretend to meet with us or negotiate because if one wishes sincerely to tackle a problem they will do so without anyone pressuring them.

– One who is concerned with the situation and wants to resolve an issue, it will not wait for international pressure and afterwards pretends to negotiate, pretends to be generous, pretends to make great efforts, but of course in the end will blame the other side for being very rigid, Gruevski said.

The PM explained that talks are sabotaged with ultra radical positions by the Greek side, adding the southern neighbor is well aware their positions are not accepted by anyone in Macedonia, neither from the Government nor from the opposition, and especially not by Macedonians. PM Gruevski said he was considerably concerned with Greece’s behaviour, and their position obviously inclined with the intention of holding no talks.

-If the talks would begin in the following period according to what I see, in terms of their behaviour, we'd enter the so called "blame game", i.e. they would try to show in every way how hard they are trying, but that we are not thankful for those efforts and do not respond adequately, Gruevski said.

He also expressed concern that this new political team in Greece not only that does not have sense for this issue, but have also made numerous steps backwards.

Regarding journalist question to comment speculations on possible Greece abandoning the Interim Agreement, Gruevski said that the two individuals who were commenting on the issue are in a way in direct correlation with the Greek Foreign Ministry and the message was intended for our friends, not necessarily for us.

Gruevski did not want to comment the possibility Macedonia to become NATO member at the Summit in Chicago on May.

It was obvious that member-states at the Bucharest Summit passed a decision, which was a result of previous illegal steps by one of their member. From this aspect we will see how this will be respected by the Alliance, he said.

Gruevski underlined that even after the ICJ ruling Greece still shows that it does not intend to resolve the name issue.

Whether NATO will show respect towards the International Court of Justice, we shall see in May, at the NATO Summit in Chicago, PM Nikola Gruevski stated.

Samaras refuses Meeting with Macedonian PM for second time

No Greek official has accepted an invitation from Macedonia's Foreign or Prime Minister after the Hague ruling.

The president of the Greece’s New Democracy party Antonis Samaras responding to the letter of PM Nikola Gruevski, implies that due to ongoing negotiations between two Governments he does not believe that such a meeting would presently be advantageous.

The most prudent way to proceed would be, at the moment, to further encourage the existing procedure of official talks described by the 1995 Interim Accord in order to solve the name issue as soon as possible; a development which, I am certain you also agree, would have positive consequences to our greater region, Samaras said in a letter.

- I am obliged, though, to point out the systematic actions of your Government and Officials of FYR Macedonia, place obstacles to the above mentioned procedure. I would thus strongly encourage you to adopt a positive approach towards this important issue our two Governments are faced with and have agreed to resolve, reads the letter by President of New Democracy Antonis Samaras.
