"The Greeks have been roundly abused by every press in Europe. They have been told they that are not Greeks; that they are at beast a mongrel race, with a very little admixture of thе classical blood. They have been told that the foundation of their kingdom was a mistake. ... Their morals, social and political, their statesmen, their constitution, have had to bear a storm of obloquy. We do not pretend for a moment to say that any of this is underserved; on the contrary, it is for the most part nothing but the literal truth, which has long been visible to those who have watched them intelligently, though it may have been unperceived by the Philhellenic eyes dazzled by phantasm of classic glory. But it would be a great misfortune if European opinion were to content itself with mere worldy condemnation."
