Macedonian Newspapers in Bulgaria and Greece About to Close

Macedonian newspapers in Greece and Bulgaria are facing great difficulties and that is the reason why they are asking the diaspora for help, say the representatives of the Macedonian minorities there, Telegraf.mk has learnt.

The people working for New Dawn (Nova Zora) in Greece and Public Will (Narodna Volja) in Bulgaria say it is extremely important the newspapers to continue to be published, but they do not know how long that will last, due to the problems they are faced with, which are mainly financial nature.

Dimitrios Ioannou, editor-in-chief of New Dawn, says the newspaper is still being released thanks to the enthusiasm of those who work on it, but that the team still faces numerous problems.
"The finances are our main problem. We work on volunteer basis, but we nevertheless need money for the newspaper to be published. That's why we ask for help from the diaspora. It is important that the newspaper continues to be published because it deals with topics that the Greek authorities obviously don't like," Ioannou told Telegraf.mk.

New Dawn has been coming out for four years, with around 20,000 copies in circulation. It is distributed for free among the Macedonians in Greece, living mainly in the country's northern parts. Often, because of the articles that are being published, the editorial team has been threatened with the banning of the newspaper.

The situation with the Macedonian-language newspaper in Bulgaria - Public Will - is similar. The paper is a thorn in the flesh of nationalist parties such as VMRO-BND, led by Krasimir karakacanov. The editor-in-chief of the newspaper that is being published for the last 23 yers is Stojko Stojkov.

Because of the problems they have, the Macedonian International Human Rights Movement and the Australian-Macedonian Human Rights Committee, have decided to increase the funds intended to finance the newspapers of the Macedonian minorities. With this step, the two associations say, they want to provide the conditions to present Macedonia's true history, as well as to spread the Macedonian culture and tradition in the regions where Macedonians live.

"Our time is now. Help. Donate. Get involved today in the initiative 'One Dollar a Day for the Macedonian International Human Rights Movement, or at the Fund of the Australian-Macedonian Human Rights Committee to support the Macedonian minorities," the announced call reads.

Ico Najdovski, a Macedonian activist from Australia, believes the diaspora will collect enough funds for the Macedonian-language newspapers to continue to exist.

"The assistance was here before but now it will only get bigger. The Macedonian-Australian Human Rights Committee is very active when it comes to such initiatives and it helps constantly, mostly the one in Australia and Canada," Najdovski said.
