Macedonians and Turks in Greece: We Will Not Vote For Parties That Do Not Even Mention Minorities

It is time to say that we, the Macedonian community should not vote, as no Greek party even mentions minorities in its program.

This has been an appeal of the organizations representing the Macedonian and Turkish minority in Greece to their fellow citizens, calling them not to vote in the upcoming early parliamentary elections, which will be held on January 25th, reads daily Dnevnik.

According to the representative of the United Macedonian Diaspora for Greece, Evgenia Naculidu, none of the parties to be on the ballot has committed that, if it takes power or is included in the government coalition, it will continue with activities in favor of minorities. Not a single program has mentioned ratification of the Framework Convention of the Council of Europe for the Protection of National Minorities, which Greece has signed back in 1997, neither signing nor ratification of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages has been mentioned. Still, these two are the basis of the rights of national minorities and communities in Europe.

“The Liberal Alliance Party, which clearly voted in favor of the rights of minorities in its program, does not appear in this election. Another party, Action, which is similar to the previous line, decided to support and race under the umbrella of the party Reka (River), which, like all other Greek parties do not depart from the view that Greece has no other minorities besides Muslims in western Thrace”, explains Naculidu.

According to her, if the boycott does not cause adverse effects on the outcome of the voting now, the situation will no be the same in the future and Greek parties will have a problem.

“Probably it won’t happen right away. But considering the fact that the Turkish minority has the same intention to boycott, I am sure that in the next elections things will be very different. Who wins now, who can take over the power, will face major problems and crashes, and then it is likely to have new elections soon. Then, there should be new people and ideas, and the Macedonians and Turks have to fight for what they want”, adds Naculidu.

Representatives of the Turkish community many times have reported for Dnevnik that, except declarative campaign promises, they have received nothing more from the Greek authorities.

“Only those parties which feel our existence deserve to be supported. Before every election we, the Turks jokingly comment, we will choose the best among all evils. But one thing is clear: the problem with minorities is not a problem of the party. It is a national problem”, says Pervin Ajrula, a member of the Party of Turks in Greece.
