Reactions after Venizelos Speech at UN General Assembly Still Loud in Greece

Greek politicians are still dealing with the speech of Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos to the UN General Assembly in which he acknowledged the well-known position of Greece over Macedonia's name.

As MIA Athens reported, this time Christian Democratic Party leader Nikos Nikolopoulos publicly spoke saying "Venizelos recognized Skopje under the name Macedonia".

According to Nikolopoulos, by saying that the attitude of "Greece is a composite name with a geographic qualifier before the word Macedonia, for all purposes," Venizelos "threw a bomb, creating a dangerous precedent, and flipped the existing positions that Greece will not recognize a name that includes the term Macedonia ".

"Venizelos clearly follows the line of Merkel, who pledges for Skopje to join the European Union and NATO, said Nikolopoulos, adding that Prime Minister Samaras now deals with the national issue about Macedonia to mask the negotiations he leads for another memorandum (plan for saving money).

"This happened a few days after the visit of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras to Berlin and his meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who lobbies about Skopje accession to NATO and the EU, and the implementation of the US requirements for which Kostas Karamanlis paid too much at the NATO summit in Bucharest when he said 'no'. These requirements now seem to have been accepted by the coalition and Samaras - Venizelos", said Nikolopoulos.

According to him, the government coalition has not been hurting just Greece, but also creates serious decline in the Greek foreign policy. "

Former New Democracy MP Nikos Nikolopoulos founded the Christian Democratic Party of Greece in May last year. Since November it has become part of the "independent democratic deputies" whose members are independent MPs in the Greek Parliament.
