GREEK MEDIA: WITH KURZ’S STATEMENT ON MACEDONIA, AUSTRIA OPENED NEW FRONT WITH GREECE

Almost all Greek media reported the statement by Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz who asked the Council of the EU to abandon the blockade of Macedonia, MIA.

Entitled "Austrian Foreign Ministry complained of Greece", "Austria presses for Skopje", "Provocation by the Austrian Foreign Minister," Greek media transferred the statement of Kurz to the European Commission report on the progress of the Western Balkans.

- Unfortunately my fears were confirmed. Continuous blockade of the accession negotiations with Macedonia, caused by the unresolved name dispute with Greece, puts into question the already achieved results. In long term it can lead to destabilization of the entire region. Therefore I call on the Council to lift the blockade on the issue, Kurz asked.

For Greek media with this attitude, the Austrian Foreign Minister opened front with Greece. "Imersia" writes that Kurz again expressed hope that Greece will stop blocking Macedonia over the name issue, a view expressed for the first time in early January, just weeks after taking office.

The paper recalls on the statement of Kurz from January when said that the name issue should not hinder Macedonia's EU integration. He then expressed hope that during the Greek presidency of the EU will be put an end to the blockade on Macedonia because "Greece is definitely interested in achieving success during his presidency."

This statement was the occasion the Austrian newspaper "Die Presse" to write a comment which said that "the new Foreign Minister comes into conflict with Greece," Greek media evoke.
