Golden Dawn Candidate Found Guilty of Inciting Racist Violence

A court in Athens on Tuesday presented Golden Dawn parliamentary candidate Alexandros Plomaritis with one-year suspended sentence for inciting racist violence, Ekathimerini reports.

The trial against Plomaritis was based on a video recording of a documentary on the rising popularity of the Golden Dawn party, in which the candidate, followed for a month during his 2012 pre-election campaign, is seen protesting against foreign migrants in Greece and people with leftist political persuasions.

"We are ready to open the ovens. We will turn them into soap but we may get a rash... We will make lamps from their skin," Plomaritis says while sitting a cafe in central Athens, talking to a group of the party’s supporters.

Constantinos Georgousis, who was a film student at the time, filmed the video for his documentary "The Cleaners", parts of which were aired on the UK’s Channel 4 in March 2013.

"If they're dark we'll lighten them... we'll whiten them with kicks," Plomaritis says in the footage while looking at a Pakistani man pushing a shopping trolley filled with scrap metal.

The radical nationalist, candidate for central Athens, claimed that his references to ovens and soap were aimed at leftists and not migrants. He also argued that his statements were made in the context of a private talks with friends. "We were joking around," he explained.

The court reports show, according to Ekathimerini, that the filmmaker said that the 20 hours of footage he filmed contains much more violent scenes, such as Golden Dawn members kicking a Pakistani man, which were edited.

The parliament candidate’s sentence was suspended for three years.
