United Macedonian Diaspora: Greek policy of double standards must stop

It is time for Greece to take the leading role to help EU integration of Macedonia, highlight the UMD before the visit of Greek Foreign Minister and Chairman of the European Council, Evangelos Venizelos.

UMD reminds Venizelos that despite all, Greece and Macedonia are neighbors and have mutual interest in improving their political relations that will lead to greater economic prosperity, tourism, and cultural cooperation. According to statistics, Greek companies are one of the largest investors in Macedonia and their investments are safe in Macedonia. On the other hand, Macedonian tourists are largest in Greece and helping their local economy.

- It takes for tango to get out of the current status quo, says the President of UMD Metodija Koloski. He points out that the Greek strategy of blocking Macedonia threatens regional stability, as well as the enlargement of NATO and the EU.

According to Director of UMD for Europe, Filip Altiparmakovski after having assumed the role of president of the European Council, Venizelos is not acting as an independent and objective voice of the Union, using every opportunity to discredit Macedonia in Brussels. In front of the French Parliament he insulted Macedonians calling our language pseudo -Macedonian language, said Altiparmakovski.

- Despite five recommendations to begin negotiations by the European Commission, Venizelos continues to misinform the public and European politicians that Macedonia does not meets the Copenhagen criteria, says Altiparmakovski.

He emphasized that this policy of double standards must stop. According to him, neither Greece nor Bulgaria meets the Copenhagen criteria if they are now considered for entry into the Union.

Venizelos tonight should arrive in Skopje from Prishtina, where he will meet with Macedonian President Gjorgje Ivanov, Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, and Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Fatmir Besimi, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikola Poposki, as well as leaders of DUI Ali Ahmeti, and SDSM Zoran Zaev. Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs from Skopje will return to Prishtina and with plane will leave for Tirana.
