“Kathimerini”: Greek authorities urged to prevent Euro-Atlantic integration of Macedonia

Pro Greek newspaper “Kathimerini” today published analysis of the call for “vigilance” because lately, “is observed mobility on the issue of name dispute” with Macedonia, reports MIA from Athens.

The newspaper writes that ” kopje recently is intensively activated in order to return to the spotlight the country integration into Euro-Atlantic institutions,” recalling the final resolution of the European Parliament “which was overwhelmingly in favor of starting accession negotiations EU, immediately and unconditionally.”

“Kathimerini” also recalls the letter that 40 U.S. congressional representatives sent to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry requesting admission of Macedonia and Montenegro at the upcoming NATO summit in the UK in September.

“It is certain that the Greek MEPs will continue the hard work in the European Parliament on this issue, where the position of Athens faces confidence. At the same time, across the Atlantic, the Greek- American community will have to perform pressure to prevent possible negative twist. In this context is the decision of the leader of the Democrats in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives Eliot Engel, few days ago to sign the joint letter in favor of the integration of Skopje in NATO, a politician who for years is supporting the Greek positions,” writes Kathimerini.

Greek diplomacy in the past has shown that there are reflexes for effective response to this question, added the newspaper, recalling the decision of the NATO Summit in Bucharest in 2008 that Macedonia cannot be admitted to NATO, stubbornly insisting that it was “unanimous decision” rather than a Greek veto.

“The current period is critical in the sense that now begins creation of positions that will be adopted and priorities that will promote the country to the NATO summit. The question few months will not be at the center of attention, but Greek diplomats in Washington and major European capitals are invited to work with time and coordinated to prevent fait accompli at the leadership meeting in September, writes Kathimerini .
